Here’s a list of those who will be leading this retreat:
Charlie Schaefer, Ph.D served in Togo and Benin for one year with SIL before attending Fuller Seminary where he obtained degrees in theology and psychology. As a psychologist, he has continued his focus on serving those in ministry internationally and domestically, combined with a counseling practice in North Carolina. Charlie and his wife, Frauke, joined the staff of Barnabas International with a particular emphasis on caring for those with trauma. He enjoys addressing the spiritual aspects of resilience and counseling needs, caring for families and marriages, and supporting men as they address their concerns. For his own fun and resilience, Charlie appreciates a good cup of hot chocolate, a long run, and a nice walk with Frauke.
Frauke Schaefer, Ph.D. served as physician in Nepal from 1990 – 1997, then trained in clinical counseling in Germany. She married Charlie Schaefer in 2000 and moved to NC. During psychiatry residency at Duke, she researched trauma and resilience in cross-cultural settings, the basis for her book “Trauma & Resilience.” She is on the staff of Barnabas International and assists many global workers with counseling, assessments, training and consultation.
Roger Boyd, Ph.D. is a graduate of Calvin College and Purdue University and has over 40 years’ experience as a clinical psychologist in a variety of settings. Prior to coming to Alongside, Roger served as the director of The Well Member Care Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He has been involved in counseling, debriefing, training, supervision, and team consultation. He is the son of Christian missionaries who instilled in him a love for God and an interest in full-time Christian service. Roger and his wife Jan have been married 45 years and are blessed with 3 adult children and 6 grandchildren.
Jody “Albert”, M.A. grew up in rural Ohio (We are using a substitute name to protect Jody since she sometimes goes to dangerous places.) She has served as a cross-cultural worker in Ukraine and Central Asia. She graduated from Wheaton College with an M.A. in Clinical Psychology. Jody brings over 19 years of overseas experience and is passionate about caring for wounded and weary international workers.
